Ukrainian Foreign Minister Petro Poroshenko met with EU Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs in Brussels on Friday, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry told UKRINFORM.

The officials discussed bilateral cooperation in the energy sector, particularly the implementation of the declaration on modernizing Ukraine's gas transit system, which was signed in Brussels on March 23, 2009.

They also spoke about the issues of reforming Ukraine's energy sector and integrating Ukrainian and EU energy markets. In this context, the sides welcomed the completion on October 7, 2009 of talks held between the European Commission and Ukraine on the country's gaining membership of the Energy Community.

Poroshenko and Piebalgs also discussed the question of drafting an annual report on the implementation of a bilateral memorandum on cooperation in the energy sphere in 2009, which will be presented at the Ukraine-EU summit in Kyiv in December this year.

The sides also exchanged their views on ways of the further implementation of the Odesa-Brody-Plock oil pipeline project.
