PRESS RELEASE
On 23 March 2009, the International Investment Conference on the Modernization of Ukraine’s Gas Transit System took place in Brussels with the participation of the Ukrainian delegation headed by President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko and Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. From the European side, the European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Commissioner for the External Relations and European Neighborhood Policy Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Commissioner for Energy Andris Piebalgs took part in the Conference. Represented at the Conference were also the European Bank for the Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the European Investment Bank (EIB), the World Bank (WB), 38 countries among whish were 21 EU member states, including Belgium, as well as the USA, Canada, Japan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, major European gas and industrial companies, other financial institutions.
In the framework of the Conference, the National Joint Stock Company “Naftogas of Ukraine” presented the Ukrainian GTS modernization master plan while the Ukrainian Fuel and Energy Ministry presented the Analysis of the gas sector reform outlining its investment potential.
The Conference was concluded by the signing of the Joint Declaration on the Modernization of Ukraine’s Gas Transit System (find it below) in the presence of President Yushchenko and EC President Barroso.
The document was signed by Prime Minister of Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko, EU Commissioners Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Andris Piebalgs and representatives of the EIB, the EBRD and the WB.
